There is a perennial Coopers Hawk nest in an ancient elm on Pine St. (Berkeley, between Russell and Ashby). Nests in this tree, or others nearby, have produced fledglings every year for several years. This year, a lone hawk may be observed standing quietly on a limb next to the nest. There does not appear to be any activity in the nest and a mate has not been seen, at least not by me. Does this behavior suggest that the mate may have been lost? What is the bird waiting for? Could it not be leaving to hunt? (It's always been there whenever I visited the site.)
