Yesterday (Saturday) morning, my husband and I went to see if we could find
the grasshopper sparrows on the Conlon Trail at Wildcat Canyon. We never
made it that far, but instead were treated to a great Lazuli bunting show along
the Wildcat Creek Trail! They seemed to be concentrated in an area past the
"rough road" sign and past the big patch of thistle (where there were lesser
goldfinches). We're not sure how many Lazuli buntings we heard because they
seemed to be all around us, singing their little hearts out, perched on the
coast live oaks. We caught a few wonderful looks at their brilliant breeding
plumage in the late morning light. There were some fine duets between the b
untings and spotted towhees as well.
