We had one happy GGAS member and three cheery leaders on today's Lake
Merritt walk. Most of the migrants are gone, but the cormorant nests are
still in full swing and the Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, and
Black-crowned Night Herons are just beginning to taper off.

But the day's big treat was the raptor count - Cooper's Hawk and
Red-shouldered Hawk, and two Peregrines. The latter spent a lot of time
in the neighborhood of the Nature Center and the Garden Club garden, so
we got really good views, including the black hoods. Be pleasant if that
turned into a nesting territory, and it certainly has hot and cold
running pigeons at all hours of the day and night....
