was at orchard nursery in lafayette this late morning and heard a sort of abrupt kacking song that sounded something like a bewick's wren, though louder and different. the bird broke from the tree where it was singing, and came down to the pavement where it worked the cracks in the sidewalk and along the edges of the raised planting beds. (for those who know the nursery, the bird was in the covered section that borders the driveway to the back parking lot near where they've hung finch feeders.) the bird was clearly a wren, and the biggest i've ever seen. also not shy... i got within eight feet of it, until one of the staff rolled by with a cart of clematis and scared it into the underbrush (and even then it didn't move too quickly). it had wide, long white bars at its eyes, and its chest was spotted like a hermit thrush, only the spots were so dense in the middle that they merged. at home i checked sibley and audubon... it's a dead ringer for the cactus wren. do we get those up here?
