I saw 5 energetic Red Phalaropes feeding near the shore at Lake Merritt at
5pm this evening (near the intersection of Lakeshore Ave and Foothill Blvd).

I also noticed that several large trees along Lakeshore Ave, 2 light poles
and a few small trees were blown over by the wind. This accidental treefall
precedes the planned cutting of about 35 trees along Lakeshore Ave and all
the trees (200+ trees) and most living things between Lake Merritt and the
Kaiser Convention Center. The trees were tagged mid-December so tree cutting
should commence later this month. I expect that the local tree dwelling
birds will be relocating to more hospitable environs.
