    Hi, all.
I was down at Cesar Chavez Pk in Berkeley at sunset
this evening and spotted a phalarope swimming along by
the west-facing rocks. The light wasn't great, and I
didn't have a notebook to record all the markings, so
I can't be sure whether it was red or red-necked.
Given all the red sightings, it was probably one of
    these.
Back on the other side of the park, my son and I
were pleased to discover one of the burrowing owls is
back. It was pretty close to where one was last
year--just south of the northeast corner of the
park--but a slight bit further south. Last year the
bird usually just watched me--tonight it was intently
watching something else and flew a short distance and
surprised me by walking a short distance atop a rock.
The waves must have been pretty good down there
recently-- there's bay-type floating debris up on the
edge of the lawns and soil has been eroded from the
rocks and trail right by the rocks.
      Happy New Year to all.
    Peace,
    Alan Howe
