I saw the Pileated Woodpecker on Monday about 3:30 pm,
in the same general area reported by Mark Rauzon.
(This was the day after Mark saw it.) I think it may
have been in the archery range. I could hear the bird
drumming from far away, but it was hard to head in the
correct direction because the archery range area is
fenced off and is a long way around. I finally saw the
bird at the top of a snag quite a distance away. The
head was in full sunshine, so it was unmistakable.
Some of the rest of the body was obscured by the
    trees.

I was looking for this bird in Redwood Park last year,
so I was glad to finally find it.
