    That's likely to be a factor too - but I like the courting theory Brian 
    Zeller proposed: it fits with the exuberance of the dance.
    
    Red-tailed hawks do something similar; I once watched one flying around 
    and around a tree where another was sitting, and the flier had (his?) 
    landing gear fully extended all the time, awkward as it musta made level 
    flight. To a human eye, it seemed obvious that the purpose was to show 
    off the length and power of the legs and talons: "Lookit these feets, 
    willya?! Such meals I can bring for you and the kiddies!"
