Since Lake Merritt is a nature preserve, perhaps I ought not to suggest Christmas Goose for the less advantaged among us. Bah, humbug. But I do wonder, where on earth do 500 pairs of Canada Geese manage to find a place to nest there?

    >I was doing a cormorant survey there last Thursday and spoke to Stephanie, the ranger. And indeed she reiterated that Lake Merritt is a nature center and all wildlife is encouraged. She also mentioned that the 3:30 feeding contributes little to geese feed, they prefer grass, but was on the chopping block because of the perceived contribution to goose diet. A discussion is taking place in house there about geese numbers, although numbers in summer are high and drop off as young fledge they have been consistent over the years at about 500 breeding pairs.
