    Hi guys,

I stopped by Lake Del Valle in Livermore late this afternoon to see what the
grebes were up to. There were only about a dozen adults in evidence near the
cattail marsh, undoubtedly due to the many boats on the lake today. I'm happy
to report that they're breeding again this year -- I saw at least three pairs
of Westerns with chicks, some still small enough to ride on their parents'
backs. There was one pair of Clark's with no youngsters. There was also a pair
of Pied-billed Grebes feeding two young.

Directions: After passing through the entrance kiosk (fee), take an
immediate right. Turn left into the first parking lot (Eagles View picnic area) and
drive to the far side. Walk downhill on the dirt road along the right side of
the huge lawn area, past the end of the lawn (the lake will be on your right).
The grebes congregate and nest around the cattails near the inlet.

    Good birding,
