Two intrepid birders joined Travis and me for the regular GGAS monthly
trip to Lake Merritt, enjoying an almost-rain-free and not-too-chilly
morning. We saw (or in two cases heard very clearly) 36 species of
countable birds, of which the stars - for me, anyway - were the trio of
Red-breasted Mergansers much closer in than usual, on the Lakeshore side
about halfway between the islands and the Embarcadero end of the lake.

We also saw a Snowy Egret in full mating puffball mode, an Eared Grebe
with the golden eye fans most of the way in, and many Double-crested
    Cormorants strutting their bunny-eared stuff.

And Travis gave us the close-in skinny on how to tell Greater and Lesser
Scaups apart when the head shape is ambiguous....
