Today I took a 2 hour lunch break from work to bird Coyote Hills Reg Park and Don Edwards SF Bay NWR. Counted 61 species, nothing rare but enjoyed these highlights: a brilliant male Allen's Hummingbird observed hover-bathing at very close range at the C.H. visitor centers' bird bath/fountain. He seems to have claimed the butterfly garden as his territory. Now is the time to watch their spectacular courtship dives. A Lincoln's Sparrow. Abundant Monarch Butterflies. At the salt ponds south and east of Dumbarton Fishing Pier: a large flock of Eared Grebes(1500+), some molting into alternate plumage, 100's of Bonaparte's Gulls. About a 700 Marbled Godwits roosting together.
