    Hello EB Birders,

Point Edith in Martinez is a good place to hear Black Rails. I heard spontaneous Black Rail calls at mid-day in July in the sloughs to the south of the road. But BEWARE. I have repeatedly heard Northern Mockingbirds imitate the "kee kee ker" call of Black Rail in this area and at the Martinez Regional Shoreline marsh. Obviously, any Black Rail call coming from the top of a phone pole should be disregarded. :-)

In 1995 I found a dead Black Rail at the side of Waterfront Rd. about a half mile from the refinery gate into Point Edith. Since then I have thought it might be productive to go night hunting for Black Rails that might be crossing the road at high tide. Unfortunately, I just don't feel this is a safe area at night.
