My surprise at Waxwings in the first couple days of September turns out to
    be unwarranted.

I generally don't see them till much later. And I know that their nesting
season is quite a bit later than most other passerines, because of the
inclusion of berries in their diet and the diet of their nestlings. I have
heard of active Waxwing nests well into August. But Joe Morlan pointed out
some useful arrival tables posted by the Santa Cruz Bird Club:

...and there is nothing exceptional about this time as an early arrival
    date for Waxwings.
