Over a dozen birders were present when the Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrow made its all-too-brief appearances at Arrowhead Marsh (in Martin Luther King Jr Regional Shoreline, Oakland) early this afternoon. Pat spotted it skulking in cover at the edge of the pickleweed a few minutes before it popped up on top of the bushes.

In addition to the elusive Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrow this morning, Arrowhead Marsh also featured a Peregrine Falcon and Burrowing Owl. Both have been previously reported recently. The owl was best seen from the trail along San Leandro Creek, next to the sign marked "18+80". Morning light would have been much better. The Peregrine Falcon was perched on one of the light stands in the adjacent parking lot. Another light stand had a partially eaten American Avocet on top.
On the way to the Snow Bunting this morning, my truck broke down on Hwy 580 near Crow Canyon Rd. So instead of finding the bunting, I got to tick off species while waiting for the tow truck. My truck breakdown list now stands at 16.

My spouse and I found the Snow Bunting this afternoon, Saturday March 6, about 4:00 PM. The bird was approximately 100 yards along the levee as previously described. Thanks, Akira.
We continued walking along the levee and located a Burrowing Owl and had a high speed flyby of Merlin. Other birds seen at the forebay included Common Goldeneye, Lesser Scaup, Clark's Grebe and Forster's Tern. Good birding.

The Snow Bunting remains at Clifton Court Forebay this morning. I first found it around 7:45, foraging on the gravel bank of the levee, on the lakeside. It was in the company of a couple of American Pipits. I then lost it while I fumbled with my camera. A couple of other birders found it about 15 minutes later hanging out near some fishermen. The bird seemed pretty calm. Maybe it's getting used to the traffic.
By the way, I also spotted a sea lion swimming upstream in the aqueduct. I didn't see any bullet wounds or tags but it appeared to be heading in the direction of Merced.

Three Hooded Merganzers continue at Hidden Lakes Park in Martinez - one adult male and two females. A young male that was here a month ago did not appear to be present today. They are in the smaller lake east of the main lake.
