This, I presume, male White-tailed Kite at Oyster Bay Regional Park was clutching its rodent prey and flying, perching, for over ten minutes. Here it is lifting off from a perch atop the candle of a Coulter Pine.

Ehrlich's "Birder's Handbook" says that females brood eggs and males hunt, delivering food to the female inflight. I did not see that, nor any sign of a nest so far but wonder if the rodent might have been a present to a female.

    Behaviors seen:

An inflight battle with a Cooper's Hawk
Mating on top of a Coulter Pine
Battles with other White-tailed Kites (there are at least three)

    >From what I can gather, the name was changed from Black-shouldered to White-tailed because an Australian kite is also called a Black-shouldered. (The "Birder's Handbook" incorrectly says the name was changed from White-tailed to Black-shouldered.)

I don't think my presence or yours at a respectable distance is a problem as they are otherwise regularly set to flight by walkers, bicyclists, and the ever-present dogs off-leash. There is definitely a dog problem there.
