It's nice when all the rare birds wave their tail at you--it makes them so
much easier to spot. Started the morning by finding the GRAY FLYCATCHER in
Knowland Park and watched it from 8:55 to 9:45 AM, getting many great
scope views. It stayed near the left and north of the T-intersection as
described earlier. The PALM WARBLER was spotted in the pines and on the
ground below on the southeast corner of the D'Anna Yacht Center between
10:10 to 10:30 AM--again providing many great scope views. I then spotted
the hybrid HOODED MERGANZER X BARROW'S GOLDENEYE in the channel just west
of 10th Street and the majority of the BARROW'S and COMMON GOLDENEYE flock
to the east of 10th Street in Peralta Park. I then headed to the Nature
Center at Lake Merritt and spotted the TUFTED DUCK, FEMALE REDHEAD, and
RING-NECKED DUCK all swimming together (thanks to the many visitors
feeding the scaups and gulls). The ducks at times were only 10 feet from
where I was standing, making all of our fancy optics and cameras overkill.
Spent the rest of the early afternoon chatting with fellow birders by the
lake. It's nice when all of your target birds are spotted in an easy day
    in good weather and lighting.
