Once again, my backyard has brought me a wealth of riches. I happened
to look up this afternoon and saw the top third of our redwood tree
occupied by a whole lot of medium-sized, light-fronted birds. I
grabbed my bins, went to the landing on our staircase for a better
view of the tree, and was rewarded with the sight of about 10-12 cedar
waxwings. Most of the birds then flew off, but a pair hung out for a
while and I was able to watch them. Today also brought the usual gang
of lesser goldfinches, house finches and chestnut-backed chickadees to
the feeder, and dark-eyed juncos and a white-crowned sparrow to do
ground pick-up,
Anyone have a really good method to kindly discourage squirrels from
grazing under a feeder? Would sprinkling cayenne pepper work? Quite
frankly, I'm getting to where I'd like to shoot the little suckers to
the moon. I have a squirrel trap but my husband won't help me move
any squirrels I catch, so that's not happening. My only pleasure is
watching the critters contemplate how to get at the feeder, try to
carry out their plan only to realize it won't work. If you watched
them, you'd agree that that is what they do when they aren't
scavenging for seeds.
