For a few years a "tame" (approachable) Red-tailed Hawk has been seen at Coyote Hills. I've heard it still hunts the area.

I think we have a new one. Yesterday (11/7) at Shoreline Park on Seaview Parkway on Alameda's Bay Farm Island, I spotted this one on a kill of a Ground Squirrel. It was banded and in a Monterey Pine. I got easily within 10 feet and watched for 15 minutes.

But, on the other hand hawks on a kill are usually quite approachable so "tame" could be questioned.

There are certainly an abundance of Ground Squirrels in the rip-rap along the bicycle/pedestrian trail on Bay Farm Island for it to hunt. Hope the rumors don't fly, as they did at Coyote, that it swoops down on small dogs.

Here's a portrait shot of it "being proud"-
