Golden Eagle(s), Etc.: Valle Vista Staging Area-Canyon Loop Trail in Orinda Area 11/21/09

Enjoyed leading my smart, enthusiastic (and fun) Merritt College "Ornithology" class today to
various spots, including the aforementioned area where I was pleased to note:

- GOLDEN EAGLE (1 adult, 1 subadult; flying together)

- RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER (1, seen by Peter Colasanti)

- SHARP-SHINNED HAWK (1, seen by Peter C. and Felix Rigau)

- WINTER WREN (1, call notes heard near Canyon, a 5-minute drive from the Valle Visa area)

During the morning at the San Pablo Reservoir (accessed with a permit via the Overlook Staging Area on Bear Creek Rd.), I was glad to see some other equally-expected seasonal species/species of local interest, such as:

- RING-NECKED DUCK (1 male, 3 female)

- EARED GREBE (2)

- GREATER SCAUP (9; 5 male, 4 female)

- RUDDY DUCK (11)
