Trying to rid myself of the birding doldrums, I went out to Arrowhead Marsh this afternoon. The best of the day was watching these three Barn Swallow fledglings out on the end of the pier.
Landing at swallow speeds to await a feed from their parents is apparently an acquired skill. There were many mishaps. Eventually they made it.

A Clapper Rail was the star of the morning for our group of
11. It was seen on the east side of the SF Bay Trail just north of S. 51st
Street (Meeker Slough area.) Returnees/birds in migration included Western
Sandpipers, Black-bellied Plovers, Semipalmated Plovers and Whimbrels. Another
hot spot was between Central and Buchanan where large numbers of birds were on
the mudflats. 36 species seen. Kathy Jarrett
