    Dear Birders:

I just returned from a walk at the UC Botanical Gardens at the perfect time in early morning when the fog was just lifting after bringing its nighttime gift of moisture at this driest season.? Droplets sparkled on the vegetation and the Garden appeared refreshed and renewed.

Some of the resident birds are still nesting or feeding young, but I was eager to catch a glimpse of the California Thrasher reported to be feeding in a large myrica shrub uphill in the Mediterranean section.? As I approached I heard its warning call and caught a glimpse of the big bird as it moved down through the branches of the bush where it probably had been feeding on the heavy crop of berries.? Once I drew close, it was quiet and no longer visible.

To find the Myrica (Myrica faya) take the paved path uphill to just beyond where a dirt path folks west to the rose garden. The Myrica is up hill on the slope.

No visible signs for fall yet except for the poison oak with red leaves vining up into one of the big Monterey pines.
