Today, Monday 8/17/09, I spotted a small group of phalaropes in the pond near the main entrance gate to Don Edwards NWR in Fremont during the lunch hour. I pulled into the refuge to confirm a group of 15 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES and two WILSON'S PHALAROPES mixed in. There was a single LESSER YELLOWLEGS and about 6 GREATER YELLOWLEGS in the slough near the main entrance road.
Upon my return to come home around 6:00 PM, I stopped again to get a better look at the area and counted 32 LESSER YELLOWLEGS- mostly in two loose groups. There was a nice mixing of both Phalaropes, a few more GRYE, and several groups of SHORT-BILLED & at least 2 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS for ideal size and structure comparison. The only other shorebirds seen were about a dozen LEAST SANDPIPERS and the resident BLACK-NECKED STILTS & a couple KILLDEER.

    Good Birding,
