The MacGillivray's first reported yesterday by Hugh Harvey was still
present this morning at Redwood Regional in Oakland. I arrived
shortly before 8 a.m. and found Glen Tepke, who had already been
observing and photographing the bird for forty-five minutes. The
warbler was singing in the open on a tall flowering shrub. After ten
minutes or so, it flew into a nearby oak, but could still be heard.
As Hugh noted in his excellent directions, this part of the Graham
Trail is accessed through the Roberts Regional Recreation Area off
Skyline Boulevard. Go the the lower parking lot, and immediately to
the left is a trail that leads downhill to the Graham. This spur is
signed. (To the left of the spur is a large sign for a broad trail
leading the Diablo Vista picnic area.) When you get to the Graham
Trail, look and listen to the right. The MacGillivray's is singing so
persistently that I heard the bird well before I got to the Graham
Trail.
It's a good idea to get there early. Regulations allow entry on foot
before the gates to the recreation area open at 8 a.m. There are
pullouts for parking on Skyline. The Graham Trial is busy with
joggers and dog walkers, but the warbler seemed unfazed. The
recreation tends to be busy on weekends, especially in warm weather.
I lingered in the area and hiked up to the Diablo Vista picnic area,
which offers a good vantage on the treetops. I also saw or heard
Olive-sided Flycatcher, Pacific-Slope Flycatcher, Wilson's Warbler,
and Warbling Vireo.
Thanks everyone for passing on the sighting!
