Late yesterday afternoon when returning home, parked in the driveway, and
immediacy heard the buzz of a "Selaphorus" hummingbird and tracked it down
to a bottlebrush tree where it perched for a short time.
The last Rufous Hummingbird I had seen was on 3-18-2009. This was at my
parents' residence (Assisted Living Facility) near Alden Lane Nursery here
in Livermore some 3 miles away. I called my parents asking them to be on
the lookout for a Rufous Hummingbird.
>From 6:20 to 7:20 PM my mother sat by the feeder I had installed in the
facility's backyard. We observed two male Rufous Hummingbirds (and one
female "Selasphorus"). All three plus two Anna's Hummingbirds continuously
fought over occupation of the feeder.
Also present on the sock thistle feeder were three Lesser and two American
Goldfinches. 5 Golden-crowned Sparrows feeding on the spilled thistle.
There was a Fly-over of what I assume to be an escaped Mitred Parakeet.
