I've birded Vollmer Peak a few times. I usually see, or at least hear,
Great Horned Owls in the pines around the the intersection of the
Vollmer Peak Trail and the paved access road to the summit.
Rufous-crowned Sparrows frequent the fences along the ridgeline east of
the Seaview Trail, on the flanks of Vollmer Peak. California Thrasher
can be found in the brush lower on the Seaview Trail, near the Steam Trains.
Good birding,

It's high and wild up there with sweeping views in all directions with several distinct microclimates depending on the orientation of the slope. As the highest point in the Berkeley Hills, Vollmer Peak gets more rain, and more important lots of fog drip in the summer which supports one of the few healthy groves of planted Monterey Pines in the East Bay. For wildflower lovers, in a grassy field Nemophilas (baby blue eyes) are coming into bloom.
