[EBB Sightings] Ohlone Audubon field trip to Sunol RW

Twenty-three participants at yesterday morning's Ohlone Audubon field trip to Sunol Regional Wilderness enjoyed fine weather and saw 54 species of birds. A much smaller group of us had previewed the park on Thursday and found 3 additional species not seen on Saturday, for a grand total of 57 species over the two days.

Highlights from Thursday, both near the Indian Joe Creek Trail just south of the footbridge:
A rufous-crowned sparrow feeding on the grass of a cattle pasture up the first short, steep trail to the left. 
An unidentified flycatcher in the sycamores next to Alameda Creek near the big oak with the picnic table under it.  It was not a Pacific slope flycatcher. We speculated about dusky, but the timing is wrong. An expert tells us that Hammond's is not out of the range of possibility. We didn't see the bird again on Saturday, so it remains "flycatcher spp."

Highlights from Saturday:
Male and female Bullock's orioles in the oaks around the same cattle pasture where we saw the rufous-crowned sparrow.
A male common yellowthroat in the brush near the gully north of that same cattle pasture. 
A lark sparrow on a dry tree in the middle of a cattle pasture up the longer, steeper trail to the left farther south on the Indian Joe Creek Trail.  (Thanks to Dave Phileo)
An osprey flying north along the creek near the Alameda Grove picnic area.
A red-breasted sapsucker on an oak on the east side of the parking lot at the end of the park.  (Thanks to Mona Brauer)

On both days, we saw a red-shouldered hawk on a nest in a sycamore near the parking lot at the end of the park.  On Saturday, inside the visitor center, via owlcam some participants saw a western screech-owl on a nest containing a newly-laid egg.
