Around lunchtime today, a brilliant rufous hummingbird (perhaps the same one reported on 1/31 by Kathy Jarrett) was flying in and out of the butterfly garden at Coyote Hills Regional Park. A woman who maintains the garden told me that she'd seen four "red" hummingbirds first thing this morning, but I only saw the one. The resident Anna's hummingbirds were displeased with the intrusion and various participants spent a lot of time chasing each other around accompanied by a lot of buzzing and squealy-wealing. The garden has been cut back allowing great views of the American goldfinches and golden-crowned sparrows in the birdbaths. A hermit thrush was on the fence under the oaks. I only had five minutes to devote to Quarry, and a brown thrasher did not show itself during my brief stay.
