[EBB Sightings] Coyote Hills Regional Park this week

This past Thursday morning and this morning I scouted out Coyote Hills Regional Park in preparation for our Ohlone Auduon field trip this coming Thursday morning. The weather was splendid both days, crisp and sunny, and the combined total for the two days was 54 species (listed below). Today's highlights were a brown pelican (in addition to the more common American white pelicans) flying over the wetlands north of the Visitor Center and a female common goldeneye diving over and over again in the slough near the junction of the Chochenyo and Dust trails. Hundreds of pintails, wigeons, shovelers, and at least one cinnamon teal were on North Marsh today, where a red-tailed hawk and a northern harrier were engaged in a territorial dispute.  The harrier would not be bullied away, and the red-tailed hawk was left to fly around screaming about it. Thursday's highlights were a golden eagle flying low over the hills west of Dairy Glen, two northern flickers and
 two western meadowlarks at the Quarry staging area, and a fox sparrow in the fennel at the hillside ramada above Quarry.  The loggerhead shrike showed up both days, once in a snag south of the main road just after the entrance and once at Quarry.  White-throated swifts were above Quarry on Thursday and over the swallow boxes along the Dust Trail today.
