It is a particularly outrageous example of our societal idiocy. Gary's
column was RIGHT ON! We build in Nature and expect nature to conform to our
artificial constraints. One question arose to me: Acorn Woodpeckers put their acorn
finds in dead wood. At least as I have observed them. Is there any dead wood
at this site for them to cache their food? My guess is the area is pristine.
No snags, brush piles, dead wood. If you also remove the food source they
will look else where. I don't know enough about acorn woodpeckers to know if
they are collecting from the trees, or scavenging from the ground. I have seen
them harvesting from trees directly. One solution would be them to get a
shaker/ harvester like is used on Almond and walnut trees shake the acorns out
of the trees and collect them. If the food then becomes scarce, they will go
else where. This might also be a heavy acorn year for the trees. The TV shots
looked to me like they were Valley Oaks? They produce acorns in my
understanding in response to conditions. Some years more acorns than others. Drought,
also nutrition play a part. All this needs to be understood before the morons
respond as they intend......
