We saw 27 species of birds at Berkeley's Aquatic Park today, including
three firsts for this season. A woman we met -- didn't get her name --
said she had seen an American Bittern in the reeds. We didn't see it,
but her description was compelling. She knew the difference between a
bittern and an immature black crowned heron.

    The firsts:

    Red breasted merganser
    Common goldeneye
    Ruddy duck

Other winter birds have been there a while:

    American Coot
    Bufflehead
Clark's grebe (On & off. Clark's and Western grebes come & go, but
they don't stay at Aquatic Park all the time.)
Greater Scaup -- I think they were greater.

All the rest of the birds were the usual suspects.
