This afternoon, just before 2 PM, I was returning from the drug store on my
bike. I rode through the Garden Center in Walnut Creek's Heather Farm Park.
As I passed the still unused Barn Owl box, right in front of me was a very
large something. I quickly realized it was a Wild Turkey. Scurring around
its feet were two chicks, maybe only a couple of days old at the most, and
I'm sure there is a better word than chicks. Mom was next to some very tall
dry grass, so it is possible that there are more young than just the two I
saw. They were making little peep-peep sounds. Pretty cute, even if they
are turkeys. Whether she had her nest inside the park or not is a matter of
conjecture. There are houses immediately adjacent to the area and she could
easily have used someone's backyard.
