Returning home from a couple of hours of birding in the foothills, my wife
and I spotted a juvenile Golden Eagle near the intersection of Calaveras and
Evans Roads at about 4:00. I pulled over to get a few distant pictures.
Shortly into the sequence the feet came down and the wings went in as it
made a pass at some critter. I shot ingress and egress until it disappeared
behind some trees. Figuring that was it, we turned to head back to the
truck. The bird suddenly reappeared from behind the trees, banked and flew
directly over us, looking like it might try again. Alas, that was not to
be. We watched it climb and disappear over the hills to the north.
