Mid morning at Mission Nursery produced 2 WESTERN
TANAGERS , 1 male (basic plumage) & one
female/immature type. A female RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH
was excavating a nest hole near the top of a snag in
the middle of the nursery. Warblers were singing from
several oaks - Yellows, Townsend's & Wilson's - while
a couple of HOODED ORIOLES kept calling, always from
the other side of the nursery from where I went. They
did a good job of staying out of sight. Also seen were
2 COOPER'S HAWK & one STELLER'S JAY sounding like a
Sharp-shinned! Red-breasted Sapsuckers were heard
calling from the east side of the nursery grounds.
This nursery complex (Mission Nursery & another,
wholesale nursery) is also the sight of Vallejo Adobe
Mission. Take Nursery Ave. off Mission Blvd. (this is
northwest of Niles Canyon Rd.) & drive straight thru
the light at Niles Blvd. into the property. Best
parking is beside the mission. (They're closed on
Tues. I believe.)
