    Hi all:

I spent the early morning trying to catch up on
reported Alameda County birds. More miss than hit,
but a gorgeous morning. Many, many singing birds.

Northern Pygmy-Owl continues to call. As reported by
Steve Huckabone, a persistent Pygmy-Owl call floated
down from the hills to the southwest of the white
bridge at the south end of Arroyo Road just past the
Wente Winery. Calling consistently from 8:30--9:00.
First sighting gets a prize. The bird was far enough
away that I couldn't pinpoint a location, but close
enough to make one think that it was
    scannable/locatable.

Frick Lake had a nice assemblage of gulls, but no
    Glaucous Gull.

San Leandro Marina had one White-winged Scoter (male),
and dozens of Surf Scoters, exceptional viewing
conditions, but no Black Scoter seen.

By the way, if you want to know more about our
    breeding birds, like Northern Pygmy-Owl,
the Oakland Bird Club is hosting Bill Bousman at the
Montclair branch of the Oakland Public Library on
Wednesday night, 7:30 p.m. to hear about
the Breeding Birds of Santa Clara County (which have a
lot in common with the breeding birds of Alameda
County). Bill's a terrific speaker and makes even our
most common breeding birds fascinating. Hope to see
    you there.

    Good birding,
