    Greetings Birders:

I have been following with interest reports of possible early arrivals
beginning with Debbie Veiss' posting which are always a delight to
read. I agree with Denise Wight (who has 'killer' ears) that it's easy
enough to be fooled by the mimics amongst us. However inventive and
versatile mockingbirds can be, I agree with Debbie that the ethereal
melodies of thrushes are not in their repertory. I'm wondering if
possibly Debbie was hearing a Hermit Thrush in its early spring warmup
when they practice their song soto voce before departing for their
breeding grounds? Although it's a bit early even for Hermit Thrushes.

In my case I'm always so eager for spring arrivals that last year I
reported a possible singing Western Wood Pewee a month before any
credible records. I'm also not immune to anxiety about the effects of
global warming on early bird migrations.

But the good news is that spring is arriving, unbidden or not, and I'm
deeply grateful for mornings that are now beginning with a robin
    chorus.
