I went looking for ring-necked pheasant at Coyote
Hills Regional Park this afternoon and surprised
myself by finding one, a brilliantly red-headed male.
The bird was out in the open for about a minute before
melting into the grass east of the junction of the
Bayview trail and the Red Hill trail (west across the
slough from North Marsh). While scanning the hillsides
for pheasant, I stumbled across the ROCK WREN at its
alternate hangout in the rocks on the hills west of
the Bayview Trail across from the southernmost,
smaller Lizard Rock footpath. On my way north on the
Bayview Trail, the bird was darting in and out of the
jumble of rocks and wandering along a dirt ridge among
the ground squirrel holes. On my way south a couple of
hours later, I refound the bird slightly higher up and
a bit more south on a solitary rocky outcropping
covered with orange lichen. Western meadowlarks were
flying around up there, too, but the rock wren sticks
    to itself.
