You might try heading up Mt. Diablo. You can take the Diablo Road exit off
680 and follow the signs. There's a good birding trail not far up, near
Rock City called the Fossil Ridge Trail:

Another good place, in nearby San Ramon, is the Las Trampas Regional
Wilderness. From 680, take the Crow Canyon exit and go south on Crow Canyon
several blocks, right on Bollinger - the parking lot for one of the staging
areas is all the way at the end of Bollinger. A pretty drive with good
birding (and pet zebras and ostriches!) along the way.

    Have fun!

With a couple of hours to bird near Danville Monday afternoon, where
would you go? (I'm arranging a walk with an old friend in the area, and
    considering alternatives to Lake Merritt....)
