Please remember that messages sent to this list must be in TEXT-ONLY
format. You will know there is a problem if you receive an automatic
reply that says your message had a "suspicious header."
About 10% of us are still unaware or perhaps forgetful. The result
of sending a message in another format is that it will stack up in a
moderator's queue where it may be forwarded late or lost. When
fishing through this queue, I give priority to rare bird sightings
but the message will still be distributed late.
What is a "suspicious" format? HTML coding. Graphics. Messages
with attachments. None of these so-called "MIME format" messages are
allowed on the list. These messages are filtered to prevent
inadvertently spreading viruses to the 800 subscribers.
I cannot tell you how to configure your specific mail program to send
TEXT-ONLY messages. However, it is normally quite easy. You can
find guidance from your email provider or from this cheat sheet that
also explains why this requirement is inflicted upon you:
http://www.expita.com/nomime.html
If you lose that URL, it is accessible from the list homepage:
http://www.diabloaudubon.com/mailman2/listinfo/sightings
The list homepage is the place to go if your ISP blocks list mail
(see blacklist section) or if you need a reminder about the
appropriateness of a particular topic.
Good birding,
--Patrick
