Hello All,
I'm a new and transient subscriber to the list. I'm in the area visiting inlaws in Clayton. Upon arrival and while unloading luggage on Thursday night, at about 10pm, I heard a Western Screech-Owl. The owl sounded as if it was at the end of Widmar Ln. (off Mitchell Canyon Rd.)
Yesterday (Friday), I took a walk up Mitchell Canyon Rd. to the State Park and found it to be very birdy. I was out from about 8 to 9:30.
Below is an eBird report (www.ebird.org), with my comments added, and I've noticed that there's some good data for the Contra Costa County so thanks to those who have submitted sightings. If you haven't yet, I'd encourage it...this is a great resource and will only become better with more people posting their sightings.
California Quail 4
White-tailed Kite 2 (one actively hunting in the grasslands closer to the State Park)

Say's Phoebe 1 (just beyond the houses, out in the grassland)
Western Scrub-Jay 12
Chestnut-backed Chickadee 5
Oak Titmouse 2
Bushtit 8
White-breasted Nuthatch 3
Rock Wren 1 (In the grassland, near the exposed dirt at the edge of the road)
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 4
Western Bluebird 15
Hermit Thrush 1
Northern Mockingbird 2
European Starling 9
Yellow-rumped Warbler 10
California Towhee 2
Lark Sparrow 2
Savannah Sparrow 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 1
White-crowned Sparrow 10 (numbers lower than past years)
Golden-crowned Sparrow 45 (seemed much more abundant than past years)
Red-winged Blackbird 5
Western Meadowlark 3
Brewer's Blackbird 20
House Finch 25
Lesser Goldfinch 35 (I'll have to check harder for Lawrence's)
3 years ago, there was a Loggerhead Shrike up in the grassland but it was notably absent last year. This year, there were no bugs impaled on the barbed wire along the road, so I assume that it has not returned.
Good Birding,
Matt Williams
