    Today at Don Edwards NWR in Newark, on the same
    electrical tower the golden eagle was on a few weeks
    ago (east side of Paseo Padre Parkway and north of the
    entrance gate), a mated pair of peregrines was
    enjoying the sunny afternoon. The smaller male was
    preening while his lady surveyed their domain.

    Less delightful to see were 6 or 7 constantly-preening
    Podiceps-type grebes (probably eared) in the ponds
    southeast of the fishing pier. It may be hard to see
    oil on a bird from a distance, even with a scope;
    excessive preening may be the best sign we have of an
    oiled bird. I stopped in at the Visitor Center to
    report the birds, but the volunteers told me to just
    call the OWCN hotline (so I did).
