Today at the shoreline
(most migrants were seen in mid to late morning)
Lesser Yellowlegs - 2 in the pond near the mouth of San Lorenzo Creek.
Surfbird - 9, 1 at Frank's Dump West, 9 at San Leandro Marina.
Baird's Sadpiper - 1 juv. in the sludge pond just south of th Ora Loma
Sewage Treatment Plant and Bockman Channel. This is the lastest fall
date I have for this species at the shoreline.
Pectoral Sandpiper - 2 at San Leandro Marina. At High tide they were
on the rocks around a small island just south of the inlet to the
marina. To reach this area, park in the southern parking lot at
the marina. Take the paved trail to the west that then curves to
the north. This is also a Parcourse. I left here at around 7:15 PM,
after the sun had gone behind the hills to the west.
Sharp-tailed Sandpiper - 1 was seen with the 2 Pectoral Sandpipers.
Second record in this area. The first was 10-8-90.
Dunlin - 1 at Frank's Dump West. This and 1 seen on 9-17 are probably
early fall migrants. It has been about 1 month since the last of
the summering birds were seen.
Long-tailed Jaeger - 0. The bird reported by John Luther at Frank's
Dump West was not seen today. I went to San Leandro Marina because
more terns and gulls are here than anywhere in this area.
Lewis Woodpecker - 1 seen flying over Winton Ave. is the first I have
seen at the shoreline.
Willow Flycatcher - 1 at Winton Ave. is the second one I have seen at
the shoreline this fall.
Least Flycatcher - 1 in the fennel and coyote brush around the base of
Mt. Trashmore. It was near the northwest corner. This is the third
record I have for the shoreline. The others are 10-2-1996 and
9/25/2000.
Western Wood-Pewee - 1 at Winton Ave. is the first I have seen at the
shoreline this fall.
House Wren - 1 at Winton Ave.
Swainsons Thrush - 1 was seen in the fennell and coyote brush around
the base of Mt. Trashmore. Only 5 later records in fall. Hermit
Thrush is more common this time of year.
Loggerhead Shrike - 1 near Sulfur Creek is the first Sept. record I
have since 2004.
Lincoln's Sparrow - 1 was seen in the fennell and coyote bush around
the base of Mt. Trashmore. It was on the north side. This is the
first I have seen here this fall.
White-crowned Sparrow - 8 at or near Winton Ave. The first this fall
was 9-14.
Golden-crowned Sparrow - 1 near Winton Ave. The first of the fall was
9-18.
Good birding
Bob
