Birders:
Between about 1:30 and 3:00 pm today Phil Gordon and I re-found a
couple of the birds that Bob Richmond reported yesterday from the Ora
Loma sewage treatment plant area in San Lorenzo. Here are Bob's
directions:
"This area is reached from Grant Ave. From the EBRPD parking area, a
paved trail goes north to San Lorenzo Creek and turns west along the
creek to the bay. The trail then turns to gravel as it goes to the
south. On your left is a pond that had 10 Lesser Yellowlegs a few days
ago (a Ruff wintered here in the late 1980's). After that on your left
is Ora Loma Sewage Treatment Plant. The trail then goes over a foot
bridge that crosses Bockman Channel. The pond the Stilt Sandpiper was
in is just to the south of Bockman Channel. These ponds are private
property, but fortunately it was in the pond closest to the public
trail. The other ponds may be dry."
Specifically, we re-found 4 plegadis sp. ibis (most likely
White-faced); they were in the pond " just to the south of Bockman
Channel", and flying about, including over the bay shoreline.
We re-found the juv Stilt Sandpiper, in the "pond that had 10 Lesser
Yellowlegs" in Bob's directions. The bird was not apparent when we
arrived, but was, with mainly Greater Yellowlegs, on our way out.
We did not re-find Bob's Pectoral Sandpipers or his Least Terns, but
there were a few Lesser Yellowlegs present -- and thousands of other
shorebirds foraging on the bay shoreline near the sewage plant outfall.
Nice.
