Lisa and EBB-
We had a pair of Bewick's Wrens and House Wrens nesting in plastic 1 gal pots up at the Joaquin Miller Native Plant Nursery this year. During one work day this spring, we watched as both pairs of parents brought insects to the nestlings. The pots are stored on their sides and seemed to make nice cozy homes. One of our Board members, Mark Rauzon, is an ornithologist by trade and says that at least for the House Wrens, this was the western-most pair that he had ever seen.
The nursery is located in Joaquin Miller Park in Oakland, behind the Westminster Theater at Sanborn and Lincoln. It's operated by the Friends of Sausal Creek, where we propagate and grow out all of the native plants that we use to do creek and watershed restoration. There are work days at the nursery every Sat afternoon, so it's possible to bird and get your hands dirty at the same time.
