Today (8/9/07)at the Berkeley Marina, we found a number of surprising
birds to help make up for a lackluster, fogbound week. At about 8:15
this morning, I hear "tink-ul" overhead, and spotted three small birds
flying over the kite hill at Cesar Chavez Park. One of them circled
around and landed, allowing three of us good scope views of a juvenile
Lawrence's Goldfinch. Around 10am, the three calling birds flew over
the Berkeley Meadow without landing anywhere in view. Early this
afternoon, a calling Baird's Sandpiper flew close by us, and around 2pm,
we discovered a Brant in the cove behind the Seabreeze at Frontage and
University. The day was further highlighted by a Pied-billed Grebe in
the harbor, the continuing Pelagic Cormorants with three full-sized
"chicks" still on the nest, and flyover Osprey, White-tailed Kite and
    American Kestrel.
The only other birds of note this week were a Spotted Sandpiper and two
Red-necked Phalaropes at the Albany Crescent on the 7th.
