Leaving my home yesterday around 6.30pm on Summit Rd in Walnut Creek, I
came upon quite a sight. Where Summit Rd leaves Lakewood Circle and
climbs a hill, a small seep/spring runs down the edge of the road for
about 30 ft - the road at this point is approximately the width of a
car, around 6-8 ft. Passing other cars has to be done by pulling into
neighboring driveways. Going down the hill towards Lakewood taking a
drink of water at the seep was a very large, somewhat ruffled, immature
Red Shouldered Hawk (we believe). It was facing away from the center of
the road and so distinguishing features were its back and tail. Color
was mottled/checkerboard dark chocolate grown with tail that had
obvious multibanding pattern. No obvious signs of typical red shoulders
were visible that I can recall.

Even more remarkable was the fact as we approached the hawk in our car,
it took absolutely no notice of us and continued to drink. In fact it
stayed right where it was as we inched past - my wife could have leaned
out the window and touched the bird! The bird showed no signs of being
injured and had disappeared on our return.

Curious to know if others have had similar hawk experiences - closest
in past I've usually gotten to a resting hawk has been around 25 yds or
more. We are assuming (though this may not be always the case) this was
an immature who did not know better.
