    Dear Birders:

I may have to reconsider my assessment of July and August as being the
season of the deep doldrums after my walk to Jewel Lake on Friday.
Swainson's Thrushes were singing from every quarter, and at least one
Winter Wren put on a virtuoso performance (do Winter Wren's do any
other kind?) I'm not sure whether I was hearing more than one wren or
not, but I heard the songster close at hand along the boardwalk and
then down near the end of the lake. The good news is that there must
be at least one breeding pair.

The most insistent singer of month ago is now silent -- the Wilson's
Warbler, but they are still about. A Warbling Vireo mustered up a
brief song, as did a Song Sparrow.

A Black Phoebe patrolled the edge of the lake, a Red-Shouldered Hawk
called in the distance, and though I didn't see them, another birder
saw a Great Blue Heron and a Double-crested Cormorant, both of whom
    are regular visitors.

The lake is still full enough to trickle over the dam and the Creek
Dogwoods have a good crop of white berries which should attract
residents and early fall migrants alike.
