I am posting this sighting for my friend Richard Schwartz, who saw (and
photographed) a Pileated Woodpecker this afternoon at Redwood Regional
Park. The bird was assiduously working the partially moss-covered trunk
or large limb of a downed tree just off the Stream Trail.

To find the location, park at the Skyline Gate Staging area on Skyline
Boulevard. Follow the Stream Trail from the parking lot, past where
Tres Sendas joins the trail. The downed tree is a bit more than a third
of a mile beyond this point--but perhaps seventy-five feet or so before
Prince Road--on the left side of the trail, up a steep slope.

The Pileated, a male, was so engaged in his woodworking project that
Richard and his friends did not spook it. Nor did a subsequent group of
hikers. He heard the bird call and thought he heard another bird
    respond.
