I was waiting for Eugenia Larson to post this as she led an Audubon trip on
Sat. to Black Diamond Mines Reg. Preserve near Antioch. A male Phainopepla
was sighted as we began our walk. Later at Lunch he reappeared at the top of
the same tree many times. This was in the 2nd group of picnic tables after
the beginning of the paved trail at the end of Somersville Rd. When you
reach this spot turn left up a paved off shoot to the top table on the
right. Sit facing down hill and look for an oak in the near distance with
several large spots of brown on the foliage.
Also seen much closer while sitting there was a male Hooded Oriole and on
the ground a Lark Sparrow in it's stunning new suit. Other highlights on the
walk were a Calif. Thrasher, Cedar Waxwing, Barn Swallows, and a Harlan Red
Tailed Hawk.
