Fred Safier wrote me yesterday about seeing a Killdeer family in the area of
the soon-to-be dog park at the north end of Heather Farm Park in Walnut
Creek. They were there again today. This area is behind a chain link fence
north of the large pond in the park. Some areas of the pavement have been
excavated for the dog park. Apparently, due to a long pause in construction
and without much disturbance, the Killdeer nested in this area. They have
    two chicks.

Also in the park today, the two Common Moorhens continue to make themselves
visible in the morning at the north end of the large pond. The nesting
Nuttall's Woodpeckers changed places at their nest hole near the southwest
corner of the large pond. From the walking path, look to the west across
the small canal and find the dead snag which leans slightly to the left The
hole is about half-way up the snag. The first Canada Goose gosling has
hatched, and on Sunday, the first Mallard family appeared. !3 ducklings
    were with Mom this morning.
